Between Fall and Survival.
The Impact of Separation on the Development and Psychotherapy of Borderline Disorders

All their lives, people are faced with different experiences of separation. When they only manage to succeed to a small extent in dealing with these experiences of separation, they run the risk of developing pathological personality structures, which in turn make it even more difficult for them to deal with separation. This causes major challenges for education, counseling and psychotherapy.
This topic will be discussed making special reference to the particularities of borderline disorders. At the center of the contributions will be three questions: What roles do burdening experiences of separation play in the development of borderline disorders? What is the significance of the topic of ʺseparationʺ in the therapy of patients who suffer from borderline disorders? How should the topic ʺseparationʺ be addressed in the conception and execution of psychotherapy with borderline patients?
